From Harvard to Tokyo: Regent Tailoring's Guide To Timeless Ivy League Style.

A story of tradition, travel, and tailoring from blazers, chinos, and Oxfords. The global journey of a classic look – told Regent’s way.
Imagine autumn leaves drifting across a Harvard quad: penny loafers on the path, a navy
blazer layered against the chill, Oxford Shirt crisp under a cable knit jumper. This is Ivy
League style: born on America’s elite campuses in the 1950s and 60s, defined by quality
fabrics, timeless cuts, and effortless sophistication.
The look emerged in post-war America, when returning soldiers entered universities in
record numbers. Drawing on British tailoring traditions but relaxing the formality,
students paired blazers with chinos, added button-down shirts, and embraced collegiate
staples like varsity knits and penny loafers. Brands such as Brooks Brothers and J. Press
became synonymous with the style - clothing that was polished enough for lectures but
casual enough for weekends in the quad.
In 1965, four Japanese style enthusiasts, Teruyoshi Hayashida, Shosuke Ishizu, Toshiyuki
Kurosu, and Hajime Hasegawa travelled to the US to document the Ivy look on campus.
Their work became the cult photo book Take Ivy, which captured not only the clothes but
also the attitude: poised, scholarly, and subtly rebellious. The book, along with magazines
like Men’s Club ignited a menswear revolution in Japan.
Japanese brands including Beams Plus and Kamakura Shirts reinterpreted the staples of
Ivy league style with meticulous attention to fit, fabric, and finish. The relaxed American
proportions were slimmed down; fabrics were upgraded; details were executed with near obsessive precision. The result was a look that honoured its East Coast roots while
embodying Japanese craftsmanship.
At Salisbury’s leading men’s clothing store, Regent Tailoring, Jason and Lula have built a

blazers, Oxford shirts, chinos, and leather loafers feel right at home in the Ivy league
tradition – so that you leave looking and feeling your best.
This is heritage menswear at its finest, rooted in history yet adaptable to modern life. All
the way from the leafy quads of Princeton to the cathedral streets of Salisbury, Regent
keeps the Ivy League legacy alive. And we’re proud to do so with craftsmanship,
character, and a distinctly local touch.
