They call these “gateway pickles”, a great pickle for those just dipping their toe in the world of pickles, a brilliant starter jar. These are an American staple, named during the great Depression when meat and cheese for sandwiches were scarce. These tangy pickled cucumbers were a cheap alternative to put between bread and butter.
