Heritage Layers for a Timeless Winter
Share
Happy new year! We hope you’ve had a lovely, restful Christmas break full of warmth, laughter and good food.
As the new year begins and the rush of December fades, the days feel colder and clearer, and everyday life settles back into both new and familiar routines. January has a particular quiet to it, and with that comes a subtle shift in how we move through the world. Style at this time of year doesn’t need reinvention or spectacle. At Regent, January dressing is about ease and confidence. Pieces you reach for instinctively, that feel capable and dependable and simply feel right as you ease into the year ahead.
Winter is the season where heritage fabrics, thoughtful construction and soft, worn-in textures earn their place, offering warmth, balance and ease through cold days. It is the simple act of stepping into the everyday with intention, not chasing short-lived trends, but choosing clothes that quietly support how you live.
Why Fabric Matters
Long before knitwear and overcoats were considered part of a seasonal wardrobe, they were born out of necessity. Generations of makers developed wool and heavy outer cloth to a solve a simple problem: how to stay warm when the weather is cold and life is lived outdoors. Early wool and merino garments were built for utility, made to last, and refined slowly over time as makers learned how to hone their craft.
This is why these fabrics endure. A beautifully made sweater or a proper winter coat does not belong to a single trend cycle. It becomes part of how you dress year after year, softening with wear, holding its shape, and gathering character the longer you live with it. These pieces become companions to daily life rather than passing fashion statements, although there is no reason they cannot be both.
Aran Crafts are a perfect example of this way of thinking. Their roll necks and textured knits are rooted in traditional Irish knit making, where each garment is designed to be worn, lived in and carried through seasons with purpose. Investing in this kind of quality makes a real difference. Not in a flash sale sense, but in how a piece performs through cold mornings and wet afternoons, how it resists looking tired, and how it continues to feel right long after the novelty has worn off. That heritage of craft, in the case of Aran Craft woven quite literally into the fabric, is why these are pieces you return to year after year. Each garment carries its own story, shaped by place, purpose and time, and the new year simply gives it another chapter to be worn. When you choose clothes that feel familiar and reliable, something subtle shifts. Getting dressed becomes easier and you move through the day with a little more confidence. They don’t change who you are, but they quietly shape how the day feels.

What This Looks Like Worn
So, what does this kind of dressing look like in practice? It all begins with one or two pieces that you can continue to wear day after day, week after week. Knitwear staples, soft shirts, and coats that feel right for cold mornings, long days and the quieter pace of winter.
Many of these pieces are best discovered in person. Regent spans three floors and seven rooms, each with its own character. As you read, we’ve noted where to find selected pieces in store, making it easier to explore when you visit.
Aran Crafts Merino Roll Neck Sweater, Natural
This traditional Irish roll neck is crafted from hundred percent soft merino wool, using time honoured knitting patterns that have been passed down through generations. It is designed for warmth and feels immediately purposeful the moment you pull it on. In this piece, the central honeycomb stitch is said to represent the hard-working bee and the steady labour of the fishermen, while the cable stitches running alongside it echo the ropes used at sea. These details are not decorative for decoration’s sake. They are reminders of why these garments were made in the first place, to withstand cold, and to be worn day after day. The natural merino wool is soft against the skin, warm without being heavy, and ideal for layering through the winter months. It works just as well under a coat on a cold morning as it does indoors once the day slows down. Like all good knitwear, it improves with wear, softening and settling into your routine over time.

Pike Brothers 1943 CPO Shirt, Marino Wool in Brown
The Pike Brothers 1943 CO shirt in ‘Atlanta Brown’ is a piece rooted firmly in function and history, offering a different chapter of winter dressing through its American naval heritage. Inspired by the US Navy Chief Petty Officer uniform, it was originally designed for warmth and durability in demanding conditions, and that purpose still defines it today. Crafted from a sturdy merino wool, this overshirt has a reassuring weight that provides insulation without feeling overly bulky. The cut is rugged yet considered, striking a balance between practicality and understated style. Worn buttoned up against the cold or left open for a more relaxed feel, it brings texture and depth to winter dressing.
This is an overshirt that works hard, ages well and feels better the more you wear it. We suggest wearing it layered over a knit or under a chunky coat, where it adds instant texture and character. Like so many pieces at Regent, it reflects the breadth of international craft found across the shop, each garment carrying its own history, function and reason for being.

A quieter way into the year ahead
January is not about starting again from scratch, but about settling back in. It is about choosing clothes that make the everyday feel a little easier, a little warmer, and a little more considered. Pieces that work with you rather than against you, and that reward wear over time.
Across Regent’s three floors and seven rooms, these garments sit alongside many others with stories already woven into them. Each is shaped by place, purpose and craft, designed to be worn properly and lived in fully. The new year does not replace those stories; it simply adds to them. Each wear, each cold walk, and each ordinary day becomes part of the fabric’s life as well as your own.
We believe good clothes are shaped by tradition and craftsmanship, and that they quietly support you as you move through the day with confidence. Whether you are exploring the shop at your own pace, booking a personal styling appointment, or beginning a made to measure journey, winter is a particularly good time to slow down, look closely and reflect.
And as the year unfolds, that kind of dependability is always worth returning to.
